Software Engineer Princeton, NJ A non-profit organization with a broad objective to contribute to the sustainability, efficiency, and effectiveness of enterprises focused on helping the higher education community take fullest advantage of the technologies that are transforming scholarly communication. One of initiatives, whose mission is to build and support an online digital library of scholarly resources from and about the developing world, beginning in Africa. We are seeking an Software Engineer to work with the team to help build software platform. The position requires experience working in a team environment to design and develop web-based applications, using Java technology on a UNIX platform, to store, manage, and deliver large amounts and many varieties of digital content. The person who fills this position will be involved in the entire software development life cycle of the project. This is an exciting position in a new group, as is in the process of completely rebuilding its software platform. The new software infrastructure must provide high performance, scalability, reliability, and availability at both the system and component levels. This job includes, but is not limited to: designi ng, developing, and testing software following defined development processes, methodologies, and standards; producing quality high - level and detailed design documents; reviewing system requirements and translating them into software solutions; developing t est plans and test scripts for unit and system testing; diagnosing problems quickly and implementing both short-term and long-term solutions; providing application deployment support and ongoing application maintenance; meeting deadlines and ensuring prope r delivery of all design and development tasks; performing as both a self-motivated and collaborative problem solver. Occasional travel to New York City is required. Required Skills and Experience A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or the equivalent in experience or education is required; a Master's degree is preferable. The successful candidate will have a minimum of 3 years of object oriented analysis and programming experience, with at least 3 years of Java backend development for large scale web-based applications. Experience working with portal frameworks, digital asset management systems, web content management systems, or development of a digital library, archive or repository is highly desirable. The successful candidate will have a strong background in distributed and multi-thread programming, Java and web technologies. He or she must have a sound understanding of the software development lifecycle (SDLC), including functional and technical specifications, documentation, QA processes, source control, maintenance and deployment. Experience working with J2EE application servers and Microsoft SQL Server database is required. The following skills and experiences are beneficial to this position: 3 + years experience in object oriented progra mming and analysis , of which at least 2 are in Java programming for large scale applications; Experience with UNIX software development, Solaris and Linux in particular; Experience with XML, different XML schema specifications, and XML transformation technologies; Experience with relational database modeling, object-to-database mapping frameworks, Hibernate in particular; Knowledge of software configuration management systems: CVS/Subversion, Ant. The ideal candidate will be highly flexible and adaptive, with strong analytic skills and the ability to see the big picture while executing on the details. The candidate must be able to quickly learn and apply new technologies. He or she must have a proven ability to work in a team environment, and effectively interact with programmers located in geographically distributed locations.
